"Solmaaz Adeli brilliert in ihrer Rolle" (ELSA, 2020) - European Cultural News
American mezzo-soprano Solmaaz Adeli is consistently praised for the luster of her timbre, vocal agility, and her impressive vocal range, her repertoire thus ranging from Baroque to 21st Century music. She enjoys an international career, performing Baroque and Contemporary Opera to Concert and Oratorio.
Ms. Adeli debuted the title role ELSA in Vienna's chamber opera festival Die Verbesserung der Welt in September 2020. ELSA was composed by Croatian composer
Margareta Ferek-Petric, libretto by the young prize-winning Austrian writer Irene Diwiak and was hosted by the SireneOperntheater under the direction of Kristine Tornquist and baton of Edo Micic.
An avid performer of the music of living composers, Ms. Adeli gave the US Premiere of Girl in the Snow by famed American composer Scott Ordway in 2019, debuted the West Coast premiere of Kim André Arnesen's Requiem (2017) under the baton of Shulamit Hoffmann, and together with the Santa Cruz Chamber Players gave the world premieres of chamber music cycles Tu Risa (2016) by Chris Praetorius and Dolcissime Suite (2015) by Grammy Award Winning Barry Phillips.
Ms. Adeli made her operatic debut in the role of Flora in Albinoni's Baroque opera Il Nascimento dell'Aurora under the baton of René Clemencic at the Vienna Chamber Opera (2011) and went on that same season to create the titlerole in François Pierre Descamp’s new opera Zumurrud as well as Subaida in Harun und Djafar by Clemencic for the Sireneoperntheatre’s Vienna Chamber Music Festival. She has performed in Austria’s most prestigious concert houses; from the Vienna State Opera's Marmorsaal, to the Brahms-Saal at the Wiener Musikverein, to the Palais Belvedere in Vienna, Rathaus Vienna, and at the Mausoleum in Graz with the Capella Leopoldina.
Ms. Adeli’s operatic highlights include Gluck's Orfeo with the Connecticut Lyric Opera, Winter Nights with the Asheville Lyric Opera, Ravel’s Concepción in L'Heure Espagnole with the Island City Opera and the Opera Academy of California. In 2017 she began touring her recital programs Made in Vienna, Latin Lovers, and AMERICANA+ which have debuted at Stanford’s Bing Music Series, Princeton’s Salon 33 Series, and the City Hall of Vienna.
Her broadcast performances include the Special Olympics 2015 from UCLA, the American National Anthem for the US Embassy of Vienna's Commemoration Ceremony of 9/11, and a live performance of White Christmas alongside members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra for Austria’s Licht ins Dunkel on ORF. She has performed for US Embassy events both in concert at the DCM residence and Ambassador’s Residence as well as for the US Independence Day Celebration.
Solmaaz Adeli holds a B.A. in Environmental Studies and Earth Sciences from UC Santa Cruz, and after beginning a career in the sciences moved to Austria to study voice. She was awarded a scholarship to the Opernschule at KUG in Graz and was a fellow in Il corso di recitazione per cantanti lirici, led by Turin's esteemed opera director Davide Livermore. Ms. Adeli has studied with KS Linda Watson, the late KS Hilde Zadek, Sheri Greenawald, Margreet Honig, and with Susanne Mentzer, Sir Thomas Allen and Graham Johnson as a SongFest Fellow for the 2017 Vienna Winter Intensive.
